Cannabis POS and Integration Questions

How payment acceptance connects to the systems already running the business — point-of-sale, delivery software, online menus, traceability and accounting — and where those connections break.

Cannabis POS compatibility, seed-to-sale reporting, accounting sync and integration limits.

What this category covers

These questions cover integration in practical terms: whether a payment product can be recorded by your point-of-sale as its own tender type, whether settlement files can be matched to daily sales without manual work, how delivery and online-menu flows differ from counter flows, and how payment data ends up in accounting without being retyped.

They also cover traceability adjacency. State systems such as Metrc track inventory rather than payments, but the payment and point-of-sale record has to reconcile against them, so an integration that cannot export a clean, tender-level daily record creates a compliance problem as well as a bookkeeping one.

Why it matters operationally

Integration quality is where a payment decision quietly becomes a labour cost. A tender the point-of-sale cannot classify, or a settlement export that does not match sales, is reconciled by a person every day — and that recurring cost usually dwarfs the difference between two providers' quoted rates.

Where operators go wrong

  • Buying a payment product before confirming the point-of-sale can record it as a distinct tender type.
  • Assuming an integration exists because a provider lists the software on a logo wall.
  • No tender-level daily export, so reconciliation and traceability matching are manual.
  • Delivery and in-store flows handled by different tools that never reconcile to one another.
  • Changing point-of-sale or menu platforms without re-checking the payment integration first.

  • Which POS systems support cannabis payments?

Most dedicated cannabis point-of-sale platforms — the systems built for licensed retail with state track-and-trace reporting — support at least one integrated electronic payment method, usually through partner integrations rather than their own acquiring. What matters is not whether a POS 'supports payments' in general, but whether your specific payment method, provider and hardware are certified for your POS version and state.

  • How do cannabis payments integrate with Metrc?

Metrc is a state track-and-trace system for plants, packages and sales events — it does not process payments. Payments integrate indirectly: the point-of-sale records the sale and reports the required data to Metrc, while the payment provider settles the money and reports separately. Reconciliation happens in the POS and accounting layer, matching Metrc-reported sales to settlement deposits.

This category is still being built out. We keep it linked from the questions hub, but hold it back from search listings until it carries at least 3 published answers — a page with nothing to list is not worth anybody's click.
