Cannabis payment method comparison

Published August 12, 2026 · Last reviewed · Cannabis Pay Hub editorial team · Reviewed by a Cannabis Pay Hub payments specialist

US cannabis businesses generally accept payment through cash, PIN debit at the point of sale, ACH bank transfers, closed-loop or app-based wallets, and — for hemp-derived products only — conventional card processing. Each method differs in where it can be used, how quickly funds settle, how disputes work, and how much underwriting it requires.

How to read this comparison

This table compares the payment methods most commonly available to state-licensed cannabis retailers and wholesalers in the United States as of August 2026. Availability is set by the sponsoring financial institution, the card or debit network rules, the merchant's state license type, and the product being sold — not by the merchant's preference.

  • Plant-touching cannabis sales are excluded by Visa and Mastercard credit acceptance policies; the entries below reflect that.
  • Hemp-derived products under the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (2018 Farm Bill) are underwritten separately and can, subject to provider policy, use conventional card processing.
  • Cashless ATM — running a retail purchase as an ATM-style withdrawal — is treated as network non-compliant and is a common documented cause of terminations. It is listed as a method to avoid, not an option.
