How to compare cannabis payment processors

You are shortlisting cannabis payment providers and want a factual basis for the shortlist rather than a ranked list.

Short answer

There is no single best cannabis payment processor, because the right provider depends on your licence type, sales channels, POS, ticket size and volume. What can be compared factually is what each provider documents publicly: which payment methods it names, which software it integrates with, whether pricing and contract terms are published, how support is reached, and which limitations it states itself. The table below records exactly that, with the source URL and the date each page was read.

This page does not rank providers and makes no claim about any company that its own public pages do not state. Every cell below links to the source page and the date we read it. No "best", cheapest, approval-rate or network-acceptance claim appears here about anyone, including us. Last reviewed August 18, 2026.

What to compare

What the company actually is

An ISO, a payment facilitator, a gateway, a POS vendor reselling processing, a bank-linked payments platform, or a banking provider. This decides who underwrites you, who holds the agreement, and who can move you if the account closes.

The acceptance method, named precisely

PIN debit, ACH or pay-by-bank, closed-loop wallet, invoicing or cashless ATM each behave differently for refunds, disputes, settlement and customer friction. Ask for the method name in writing, not a phrase like 'card acceptance'.

Integration reality with your POS

A documented, named integration reconciles automatically. 'Compatible' usually means end-of-day manual reconciliation. Ask which version, which reports, and who supports the connection when totals disagree.

Total cost, not the headline rate

Per-transaction and per-item fees, monthly and gateway fees, PCI, chargeback and reserve costs, hardware and onboarding charges. Model them against your real basket mix.

Reserve, funding and termination terms

Funding schedule, any rolling or capped reserve and the conditions that change it, notice on termination, treatment of held funds, and whether reporting and stored customer records transfer out.

Support you can reach on a Saturday

A published phone number and defined hours matter more than a portal when a terminal fails during a weekend rush. Check what is documented publicly, not what is promised verbally.

What each provider publishes

Sourced from each company's own public pages. Blank cells mean the fact is not published, not that it is unfavourable.

Questions operators ask

Who is the best cannabis payment processor?
No provider is best for every operator, and any page claiming one is selling. The choice depends on your sales channels, POS, ticket size, state rules and how much customer friction you can absorb. Compare documented payment methods, integrations, total cost and contract terms, then require the answers in writing.
Can a licensed dispensary accept Visa or Mastercard normally?
Not through standard card acceptance. Because cannabis remains federally illegal, the major card networks do not permit plant-touching sales on their rails, which is why compliant options centre on PIN debit, ACH or pay-by-bank, and closed-loop methods. Any offer of ordinary credit card acceptance for a plant-touching business should be treated as a serious risk.
Why do so few cannabis providers publish pricing?
Cost depends on method, volume, average ticket and underwriting, so most publish no rate card. That is normal — but it means you should compare written quotes on the same volume assumptions, including monthly, gateway, PCI, chargeback and reserve costs.
How often is this comparison updated?
Each claim carries the URL and the date it was read, and the page states its last review date. Providers change their sites, so verify anything decisive against the live source before signing.
