CBD & hemp

Can CBD businesses accept credit cards?

Short answer

Often yes. Hemp-derived CBD products meeting federal hemp definitions are widely — though not universally — supported by high-risk-capable processors, subject to underwriting on product testing, THC limits, marketing claims and fulfillment practices. Mainstream payment facilitators frequently prohibit CBD outright, which is why accounts opened with them get closed.

The fuller explanation

CBD sits in a different position from plant-touching THC cannabis: hemp production is federally regulated rather than prohibited, but product-level rules — particularly around ingestible products and health claims — remain contested. Processors therefore underwrite the product and the marketing, not just the business.

The most common reason a compliant CBD merchant loses acceptance is not the product; it is the website. Disease or therapeutic claims, missing lab reports, unclear subscription terms and inaccurate product descriptions all read as risk to a reviewer.

What CBD underwriters check

  • Certificates of analysis and THC concentration compliance.
  • Product categories, including any ingestible or inhalable items.
  • Website claims, disclaimers and age gating.
  • Subscription terms, refund policy and dispute history.
  • Supply chain and fulfillment documentation.

Important caveats

  • State rules for hemp products vary and some restrict specific formats.
  • Health or therapeutic claims can cost you the account regardless of product compliance.
  • Card-not-present CBD carries a higher chargeback profile, which affects pricing and reserves.

Hemp produced under the 2018 Farm Bill framework — containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis — is federally lawful, so hemp businesses can obtain merchant accounts and accept Visa, Mastercard and other card brands. Approval is not automatic: acquirers underwrite hemp as high risk and will review products, cannabinoid content, testing documentation, supplier chain and marketing claims before boarding.Open QuestionCan THCA businesses accept credit cardsTHCA businesses generally cannot count on ordinary branded credit card acceptance, because acquirers and card networks look past the THCA label at the product's total THC potential and its ability to convert to intoxicating THC when heated. Many providers treat THCA flower and concentrates the same way they treat plant-touching THC cannabis rather than as ordinary hemp. Some THCA sellers do get card-present or card-not-present processing through a provider that has specifically underwritten the category, but this is not a default outcome and eligibility should be confirmed in writing before you build a checkout around it.Open QuestionCan hemp businesses use StripeStripe publishes a restricted-businesses policy that covers marijuana and certain hemp-derived and cannabis-related products, and hemp business eligibility depends on the specific product category rather than a blanket yes or no. Some non-ingestible or lower-risk hemp goods may be workable under Stripe's current policy, while ingestibles, smokable products and higher-THC-adjacent items such as THCA are more likely to be restricted. Read Stripe's current restricted-businesses page for your exact product types before building on it, and have a dedicated hemp-capable merchant account as a backup plan.Open Articlecbd payment gatewayCBD ecommerce usually can accept cards, but the account sits in a specialist high-risk lane where the gateway, the descriptor and the product claims on your site…Open ArticleHemp Payment Processing and the Documents Underwriters Ask ForHemp payment processing is decided by paperwork.
